The Princess Shop
In late 2008, Betty-Ann met a young woman named Chantal Maloney when
they worked together on a project to send bicycles to children in
Africa. Chantal told Betty-Ann about another charitable initiative
she'd started along with a friend named Ainsley Robertson called the
Princess Shop. It recycled prom dresses to girls who couldn't afford
them. By utilizing social networking and the charity of local businesses,
her organization was able give dresses and photography services to
39 graduating seniors in its first year of operation.
Betty-Ann was moved to help this young woman and set up a fundraiser in her home, ultimately getting 60 women to donate money, shoes, and dresses to the program. Many of her friends also provided mentorship and assistance: an accountant provided money advice, a consultant helped her implement a strategic plan, and another friend volunteered to chair the program's board. The event was a tremendous success that reminded all who were present of the value of mentorship - and of the importance of women providing a hand up to other women.
