Releasing the Energy of Negative Emotions

Just like time and money, our energy is a form of currency. And we each have a diversified portfolio comprised of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual energy - four very different but deeply interrelated currencies.
As with the money markets, when the value of one energy goes down it affects the others. Thus, it's in our best interest to cultivate all our energies to have physical stamina, mental engagement, emotional nurturance, and spiritual connection.
The investment in self-care to maintain these currencies carries a high interest rate with good returns. And it can be accomplished by incorporating a few simple things into our daily lives:
1) Physical Energy. This is the energy of movement, which reveres action and strength but can burn out in the absence of self-regulation. When I'm exhausted at my desk but keep working without stopping to replenish my energy, I risk my physical health.
To maintain and restore physical energy it helps to breathe deeply, eat small amounts of food often, move your body each day, drink water, and get enough sleep at night.
2) Mental Energy. This energy powers the mind, and we use it for absorbing new facts and learning to use new technologies
(like Facebook, Twitter, and other social media). It worships thought, taking great pride in conceptual thinking, concentration, and analysis. But a strong, vigilant mind can be overactive as well - worries and concerns can enter our heads, wasting our energy if we allow them to linger. Maintain your mental energy by replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations and self-talk while visualizing your success.
3) Emotional Energy. This is the energy of feelings, including how we relate to ourselves and to others. Treat yourself as tenderly as you would an adopted child yearning for love. No more looking in the mirror and pulling on parts of your body unkindly! And treat others the same way: give love unconditionally, without expectations.
Let go of judgment and practice compassion to form good supportive relationships.
4) Spiritual Energy. This energy finds a deeper connection, which gives meaning and identity to our lives. When we align our external actions with our innermost values we'll connect to our soul's purpose, providing a reason for being. I experience this whenever I get a touching email following the release of a newsletter.
Spiritual energy can be restored by prayer, readings, chanting, being in nature, or any number of other spiritual practices that work for you.
Our physical actions follow our mental thoughts, which are directed by our emotion. All are held in place by our spiritual belief system, which tells us what matters.
So by getting in touch with our inner self - our reason for being - we can direct all our energy with clarity and intention. Imagine how much more valuable our energy will be! Like a rising dollar, we'll be able to spend less and get more value. Isn't that a great thought?
